Title : Inaccurate presentation of active neuronal ensembles leads to hallucinations in schizophrenia

Abstract:

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a complex psychiatric disorder characterized by disturbances in perception, cognition, and social behavior, with hallucination representing one of its most prominent symptoms. The active neuronal ensembles are a group of neurons coordinate to form memories as well as to retrieve them. We hypothesized that inaccurate active ensemble presentations during learning or memory retrieval might be the cause of hallucinations. In the primary visual cortex (V1) and auditory cortex (A1) of mouse brains under the condition of hallucination induced by a psychedelic -DOI, we found that the sizes of active ensembles are greatly increased comparing to saline-treated controls. We also observed the same increases in V1 and A1 of *Disc1* KO mice, a genetic mouse model of schizophrenia, which supports our hypothesis. We now aim to reveal the mechanism of this inaccurate presentation of active ensembles during hallucination. By utilizing MAVEN, we will investigate the interplay between dopamine and serotonin in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and subcortical regions, and how this interplay leads to increase in active ensembles in V1 and A1. We hope to better understand the mechanism of hallucination in SCZ and find the potential targets for treatments.

연사 2: Sheng-Ta (Peter) Tsai

Attending doctor, China Medical University Hospital

    Assistant professor, China Medical University

Title : Neural Engineering and Precision Surgery (NEPS) in Taiwan

Abstract:

Dr. Tsai spent 20 months at the Neural Engineering and Precision Surgery Laboratories at Mayo Clinic. Following this training, he transferred the technology to Taiwan and established a comparable laboratory platform. In this presentation, he will introduce ongoing collaborative projects with Professor Weng, focusing on schizophrenia models, as well as propose future point-of-care innovations for application in the neurosurgical intensive care unit (ICU). Additionally, he will outline prospective international collaborations with Hanyang University and Korea University.

연사 3: Paul J. Chen

Attending Neurosurgeon, China Medical University Hospital

Title : Introduction to China Medical University Hospital and the Department of Neurosurgery

Abstract:

Professor Chen is a senior neurosurgeon at China Medical University Hospital. In this talk, he will provide a comprehensive overview of the university, hospital system, and the Department of Neurosurgery. He will present surgical case volumes across a range of neurosurgical conditions, highlighting the institution’s clinical capacity. Furthermore, he will discuss the accessibility of patient-derived samples from the operating room and ICU settings, emphasizing the hospital’s strong potential for translational research and interdisciplinary collaboration bridging clinical practice and basic science.
